Migraines are more than “just headaches.” They can be debilitating, exhausting, and disruptive to everyday life. Many people who struggle with migraines experience throbbing pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, neck tension, visual disturbances, and lingering fatigue that can last for hours or even days.

As a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, I often see patients who feel frustrated after trying multiple medications or simply want a more natural, supportive approach to managing their symptoms. Acupuncture and acupressure can be incredibly effective tools for reducing the frequency, intensity, and duration of migraines while supporting the body as a whole.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine Views Migraines

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), migraines are not viewed as a single condition with one universal cause. Instead, headaches are seen as a sign that the body is out of balance.

A migraine may be connected to:

  • Stress and emotional tension

  • Hormonal fluctuations

  • Poor sleep

  • Digestive imbalances

  • Muscle tension

  • Blood circulation issues

  • Overwork and exhaustion

  • Dietary triggers

  • Changes in weather or environment

TCM focuses on identifying the underlying pattern contributing to the migraines rather than simply masking symptoms. This individualized approach is one reason acupuncture can be so helpful for chronic headache sufferers.

How Acupuncture May Help Migraines

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to encourage balance and circulation.

Research suggests acupuncture may help:

  • Reduce migraine frequency

  • Decrease pain intensity

  • Relax muscle tension

  • Improve circulation

  • Calm the nervous system

  • Support better sleep

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Lower reliance on pain medication

Many patients report not only fewer migraines, but also improvements in overall wellbeing, energy, digestion, and sleep quality.

Treatments are gentle, relaxing, and tailored specifically to each person’s symptoms and health history.

Acupressure Points for Migraine Relief

Acupressure uses the same principles as acupuncture, but instead of needles, pressure is applied using the fingers or hands. While it is not a replacement for professional treatment, it can be a helpful tool to use at home between appointments.

Here are a few commonly used acupressure points for headache and migraine support:

LI4 — “Joining Valley”

Located in the webbing between the thumb and index finger.

This point is often used for:

  • Headaches

  • Facial tension

  • Stress

  • Neck tension

Apply firm but comfortable pressure for 30–60 seconds while breathing deeply.

GB20 — “Wind Pool”

Located at the base of the skull in the hollows on either side of the neck muscles.

This point may help with:

  • Migraines

  • Neck tension

  • Stress headaches

  • Eye strain

Gentle pressure or massage in this area can feel especially relieving during tension-related headaches.

Yin Tang

Located between the eyebrows.

Often used for:

  • Stress

  • Frontal headaches

  • Anxiety

  • Calming the nervous system

Apply gentle circular pressure while taking slow breaths.

When to Seek Treatment

If migraines are interfering with your work, sleep, mood, or daily activities, it may be time to explore additional support. Acupuncture can be used alongside conventional medical care and may benefit both occasional and chronic migraine sufferers.

Because every person is different, treatment plans are individualized based on your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and overall constitution.

A Whole-Body Approach

One of the things I love most about Traditional Chinese Medicine is that it looks at the whole person — not just the headache itself. Our goal is not only to reduce pain, but also to help the body become more resilient over time.

Whether migraines are connected to stress, hormones, muscle tension, digestion, or burnout, acupuncture offers a gentle and natural approach that supports both symptom relief and long-term balance.
