Many patients have been asking me what food suggestions I have for this change in season. They felt the difference when I eliminated salads and breakfast shakes in the winter, they savored their dandelion greens in spring, and appreciated the abundance of cucumbers and less cooked vegetables in the summer. Now as we enter autumn, another change is encouraged so we can avoid that school cold that gets passed across our city while feeling our best.
Suggestion #1: Replace your breakfast cereal (which in reality I discourage all year long) with warm oatmeal. A nice treat is to add some pumpkin purée, honey and cinnamon to it. It tastes like healthy pumpkin pie!
Suggestion #2: Look outside at your garden. What is in season? Beats, squash, cooked carrots, turnips and sweet potatoes would be a fantastic choice. This is the time to give up the cool crisp salad for a warm veggie stir-fry. If you want an extra immune boosting kick, throw in some ginger, garlic, and onions.
